We keep and breed three carefully selected Coturnix varieties: Japanese Coturnix Quail, Italian Coturnix Quail and Roux Coturnix Quail. They are small, productive and fascinating birds, suitable for new keepers as well as experienced poultry enthusiasts.
At Yateley Smallholding we currently keep and breed three Coturnix quail varieties, each with its own distinctive colouring and appeal.
Wild Type
The classic Coturnix quail, with natural brown, cream and buff patterned plumage. Hardy, attractive and productive, making them an excellent choice for both first time keepers and experienced breeders.
Golden
A striking golden Coturnix variety with warm cream, gold and brown plumage. Italian Coturnix combine beautiful colouring with the productive characteristics that make Coturnix quail such enjoyable birds to keep.
Distinctive Colour Variety
Roux Coturnix are an eye catching variety with distinctive warm colouring. They are particularly interesting to breeders and form an important part of our carefully managed Coturnix breeding programme.
Coturnix quail are small, productive and rewarding birds to keep. They need considerably less space than chickens and mature very quickly, with females often beginning to lay from around six to eight weeks of age when conditions are right.
Their naturally speckled eggs are a real feature, while their short incubation period makes them particularly interesting for anyone wanting to experience hatching and rearing their own birds.
Quail are not simply miniature chickens, however. Their housing, feeding, handling and breeding needs are different. At Yateley Smallholding, we want to help customers understand those differences so they can get the best from their birds from day one.
Coturnix quail, often referred to as Japanese quail, are one of the most popular domesticated quail kept for eggs, breeding and enjoyment. Their compact size, quick maturity and gentle character make them an appealing alternative or addition to keeping chickens.
They are available in a wide range of colour varieties. At Yateley Smallholding, our current focus is on three: Japanese Wild Type, Italian and Roux Coturnix.
The Japanese Coturnix is the classic quail most people picture when they think of domesticated Coturnix. Often described as Wild Type or Pharaoh colouring, these birds have beautifully patterned brown, cream and buff plumage that resembles the natural colouring of wild Coturnix.
They are hardy, productive and an excellent all round choice for anyone starting with quail. Their natural feather pattern also makes mature males and females relatively straightforward to distinguish in suitable lines.
We keep Japanese Coturnix as an important part of our breeding programme and as one of the core varieties available from Yateley Smallholding.
Italian Coturnix are a beautiful golden variety, with warm cream, gold and brown colouring that gives them a very different appearance from the traditional Japanese Wild Type.
They retain the compact size and productive nature associated with Coturnix quail while adding a lighter, striking colour to the flock.
Italian Coturnix are a great choice for keepers who want attractive, productive birds or who are interested in breeding and understanding Coturnix colour varieties.
Roux Coturnix are a distinctive and attractive colour variety that we are particularly interested in at Yateley Smallholding. Their warm colouring sets them apart from both Wild Type and Italian birds.
Roux genetics are also interesting from a breeding perspective, which is why we are carefully developing and managing this line within our quail programme.
As our Roux breeding line develops, we will share more information through our Quail Knowledge Centre for customers interested in the genetics, breeding and identification of these birds.
